Ford brings back the value-based STX trim package

Ford is reintroducing the value-minded STX trim package for the 2017 F-150 and, for the first time, offering it on the Super Duty line. Ford fans will remember the STX package from the last generation F-150. It offered an economical way to spruce up a base-level truck without going overboard on options and features. Like before, the STX trim slots between the base XL and the mid-level XLT.

The STX package hasn’t been offered since Ford introduced the aluminum-intensive 2015 F-150. Now as the 2017 model year rolls in, customers can finally check that option box. This is likely a response to customers complaining of inflated pickup prices. It’s hard to blame them, either. Prices for an F-150 Crew Cab with the base V-6 and no options start around $37,000.

Ford’s truck marketing manager reinforces the notion in the press release, saying, “[The] STX is for customers who want the utility of an F-Series truck in a stylish, well-optioned package at a competitive price.”

Likewise, Super Duty customers can now choose the STX package that adds many of the modern touches without sending prices through the roof. The STX package can be had on every cab, bed, and engine configuration. F-150 customers can choose the STX package on SuperCab and SuperCrew configurations with all but the base V-6 engine option.

What makes the Ford F-150 and Super Duty STX special

The STX package is designed to add styling and convenience features that attract buyers. Think of it as a dress-up kit for the base XL trim package, but without all the trimmings of the mid-level XLT trim. This holds true for both the F-150 and the Super Duty. Detailed here is what the STX package adds to each pickup.

F-150 STX

The exterior of the F-150 STX is treated to 20-inch, machined-aluminum wheels with dark gray painted pockets. The front grille is a black billet-style unit with black mesh accented by a body-color surround. Both front and rear bumpers are body color. Fog lamps are also included. Capping the curb appeal is the STX logo in the typical location on the cargo box.

Inside, the big change is SYNC 3 with its eight-inch infotainment screen. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included. This adds an air of sophistication and up-market appeal to the otherwise standard cabin. The seats get a unique black sport cloth. Up front, bucket seats and the Flow-Through center console is added, but the steering column-mounted gearshifter remains. The seats also gain manually operated lumbar support. Lastly, tinted windows are included.

As mentioned before, the F-150 STX can be had in the extended, SuperCab cab or the full SuperCrew cab styles with the various bed lengths. Available engines include the 2.7-liter EcoBoost V-6, the 5.0-liter V-8, and the newly revised 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6.

Prices start at $35,615 for the F-150 SuperCab STX.

Super Duty STX

While the F-150’s STX package goes for the monochromatic and blacked-out look, the Super Duty’s STX package brings chrome. Up front, the grille is bright chrome, as are the front and rear bumpers. The conventional chrome fender vent now gets an STX logo incorporated. For Super Duty trucks with single rear wheels, the STX package adds unique, double-spoked aluminum wheels with chrome hub covers. Duallies make do with the unaccented steel wheels.

Ford didn’t add the high-level SYNC 3 system with Super Duty’s STX package. Rather, the truck makes do with an AM/FM stereo with a single CD/MP3 player. Additionally, cruise control is standard with its steering wheel-mounted buttons.

Customers can order the STX package on any cab and bed configuration, along with either the 6.2-liter V-8 gas engine or the 6.7-liter Power Stroke V-8 turbodiesel.

Prices start at $34,910 for the F-250 STX. Opting for the F-350 STX bumps the price to $36,080. Keep in mind, those prices are for a single cab, long bed truck with RWD powered by the 6.2-liter gas engine.

Why It Matters

The STX trim package is a welcomed addition to Ford’s extensive line of trims. Save for the fleet-spec XL, the XLT and higher trims are getting more and more expensive with each model year. This often prices customers out of a new truck, forcing them to the pre-owned market. Ford understandably has to cover R&D costs, along with turning a profit, but both the F-150 and Super Duty are becoming increasingly harder for the average American to afford – that is, unless they finance for a ridiculous seven years.

The STX is a way around this. It offers average folks a change at a good-looking truck that doesn’t look like it belongs to the local city government. With the exterior add-ons and SYNC 3 in the F-150, the STX package might seriously boost F-Series sales for Ford. That would be a good thing for both Ford and its customers.

The STX Appearance Package will be available for 2017 F-150 and Super Duty trucks, building on the success of the previous generation F-150 STX. This will be the first time F-Series Super Duty is offered with the STX package.

“STX is for customers who want the utility of an F-Series truck in a stylish, well-optioned package at a competitive price,” said Doug Scott, Ford truck group marketing manager.

Positioned between the XL and XLT models, STX adds a stylish exterior and many interior features that aren’t normally available on the entry level F-150:

• 20-inch machined-aluminum wheels with dark gray painted pockets
• Black billet-style grille with body-color surround and black mesh insert
• Body-color front fascia and front and rear bumpers
• SYNC® 3 with 8-inch center stack touch screen and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto™
• Privacy glass
• Unique black sport cloth seats with Flow-through Console and steering column-mounted shifter
• STX Sport Box decal
• Fog lamps
• Manual driver and passenger lumbar support

The F-150 with the STX package is available with the 2.7-liter EcoBoost, 5.0-liter V8 and 3.5-liter EcoBoost.

The Super Duty STX Appearance package brightens up the exterior with chrome features and unique badging. The package is available with either the 6.2-liter V8 gas engine, or the 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel, and adds the following to the XL trim:

• Bright chrome grille
• Chrome front and rear step bumpers
• STX fender vent badge
• Unique aluminum wheels
• Steering wheel-mounted cruise control
• Bright hub covers (SRW only)
