There are several different options to consider when performing this conversion. MWR makes a series of three kits; you may need one, two or all three. Please read through the information below to determine what you need to order.

1ZZ engine, converting current 5- or 6-speed SMT transmission

    • This is the simplest and easiest conversion. If your stock engine and transmission are in good shape they can both be used- no need to even remove the transmission for the conversion. Warning: if your SMT mechanism has been failing and this has caused grinding or other mechanical shifting problems then your transmission may have internal damage. This will be obvious after conversion and if there is damage the transmission will need to be rebuilt or replaced.
    • To perform this conversion you will need kits A, B and C.
  • Engine: Kit A gets rid of your SMT-specific engine computer and electronic throttle body, replacing them with manual transmission models and includes instructions and connectors for making the minor wiring changes required for this conversion. This kit is required if keeping the 1ZZ regardless of whether you’re sticking with your original transmission or changing to a different one.
  • Body: Kit B converts the car itself to manual transmission spec. Included are clutch pedal assembly, clutch master and slave cylinders as well as hydraulic line, shifter cables and shifter, etc. Kit B2 includes a narrow brake pedal assembly and is only needed if your car is a 2003-05 model. The only part not included is shift knob; you can purchase separately the knob that like best and that has the proper shift pattern on it for your 5 or 6 speed transmission.
  • Transmission: Kit C (5-Speed)(6-Speed)converts your SMT transmission for MT operation. It includes a new MR2-S specific shifter shaft and cover fully equipped with the internal shifting mechanism pieces as well as the external detent. These parts are needed for the SMT->MT conversion and are not included with our normal MR2-S 6-speed swap shaft.

All instructions are included. This conversion can be done by an experienced mechanic with or without the use of a lift; it can be done in a driveway over a weekend.

2ZZ engine swap, converting current 5- or 6-speed SMT transmission

    • This is the most cost effective way to get your SMT MR2-S up and running with a 2ZZ engine swap. If your stock transmission is in good shape it can be used. Warning: if your SMT mechanism has been failing and this has caused grinding or other mechanical shifting problems then your transmission may have internal damage. This will be obvious after conversion and if there is damage the transmission will need to be rebuilt or replaced.
    • To perform this conversion you will need kits B and C.
  • Engine: you’ll need all of the usual parts for an MR2-S 2ZZ swap; engine, intake manifold, throttle body (with electrical connectors), engine mount, dipstick tube, Celica GTS ECU or Power FC, injectors, header, air intake, flywheel, etc. See the MR2-S 2ZZ Swap Tech Pagefor more specifics. If you purchased a 2ZZ engine swap package from MWR then many of these parts are already included. You’ll just need air intake and header (exhaust manifold).
    • All instructions are included. This conversion can be done by an experienced mechanic with or without the use of a lift; it can be done in a driveway over a weekend.

Installing a different transmission

If you are replacing your old SMT transmission because it’s damaged or because you want different ratios or an LSD then you will not need Kit C.

If installing a new MWR 6-speed transmission configured for the MR2-S or a used stock 5-speed transmission from a manual transmission MR2-S then you do not need any additional parts.

If you are installing a used 6-speed transmission from a Celica, Corolla or Matrix then you will need the same parts you’d need if installing this transmission into a manual transmission MR2-S: Shifter Shaftand Reverse Blockout.

If you bought a 2ZZ swap package with transmission from MWR then the shifter shaft and reverse blockout will already be installed in your transmission.

How difficult is this swap?

The wiring is not difficult at all and a diagram is provided. You’ll need to pull out your driver’s seat and spend some quality time with your head under the dash to get the pedal assemblies installed. You must grind a small hole in the front firewall so the master cylinder may pass through. Center console needs to come out to swap in the shifter and cables. The fuel tank does not need to be dropped to route the cables or hydraulic hose. Swapping throttle body and shifting mechanism hardware in the engine bay is easy and there is good access. You must get under the car to install the release fork adapter. If you’re swapping transmission or engine then you probably know what is generally involved there; neither operation is more difficult because of the MT conversion. Transmission can be changed without removing the engine.

Toyota Motor Corporation's C family is a family of manual transmissions built for small to mid-sized front-wheel-drive vehicles (but also used in mid-engine applications).
